Poll: Who’s Your Pick for Canada’s New Governor General?
Although these things are never scientific, the poll we recently put out there on-line about whether Canada’s next Governor General should be Aboriginal indicates that, as of midnight, June 30, a decent majority (65%) of voters are in favour of the idea. (If you haven’t already, you can still vote.)
Given this level of support for an Indigenous G-G, we thought folks might also want to express an opinion on who should be appointed to the job. Names mentioned so far include (listed alphabetically by first name):
- Leona Aglukkaq (current federal Health Minister)
- Mary Simon (President, Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami)
- Phil Fontaine (former Assembly of First Nations leader)
- Sheila Watt-Cloutier (former International Chair, Inuit Circumpolar Council)
- Wilton (Willie) Littlechild, (Commissioner, Truth and Reconciliation Commission)
Not sure you like any of the above for the position? Write in Suggest your own Aboriginal nominee for Governor-General in the comments area below or by email and we’ll add them to the list. With the new G-G expected sometime during the Queen’s current visit, we’ll soon find out whether the rumours of an Aboriginal appointee are true.
UPDATE: Thanks to comments received via Facebook, we are pleased to add two more names to the list of ‘nominees,’ acclaimed singer-songwriter Buffy Sainte-Marie and sitting Senator, The Hon. Sandra M. Lovelace Nicholas.
